Happy Haitian Flag day to all the Haitians across the globe. Haiti became the first Caribbean country free of slavery and the first black-led republic in 1803. On May 18th, one of the leaders in the Haitian Revolution, Jean-Jacques Dessalines was credited for creating the first flag free of French colonial rule. The original flag featured two vertical blocks, red and blue, with the popular battle cry, “Libertè ou La Mort (Freedom or Death)” written across it. The current flag has one blue and one red horizontal band, Haiti’s coat of arms, and the phrase “L’union fait la force”. This phrase used by many countries, means “unity makes strength”. Although known for its environmental and political tragedies, Haiti is full of beauty and historical resilience. From the island to states in the U.S., like Florida and New York City, Haitians will celebrate today with ancestral pride in their hearts, playful rhythms swaying their hips, and delicious food on their tongues.
