Tier arrived with a theme and committed to it. Gearing up for the HBCU week and homecoming celebrations, Tier designed a collection for the Brooklyn-bound student – Tier University. The trio behind Tier – natives to Brooklyn, New York – Nigeria Ealey, Esaïe Jean-Simon, and Victor James had a clear vision to execute. Tier NYC’s F/W 2022 runway showcased an elevated collegiate-inspired collection of Tier’s signature streetwear. The show opened with four trios of fraternities and sororities stomping the steps of the LIU (Long Island University) Brooklyn Campus courtyard, where the runway would soon commence. If the Deltas and AKAs didn’t transport showgoers to an HBCU assembly, the DJ did. They stepped to homecoming hits like O.T. Genasis’ “Everybody Mad” and Lil Boosie’s “Wipe Me Down.” As the models made their way down the runway lined with lampposts decorated with Tier University banners, the music shifted to old-school, ‘90s era hip hop. Over Fatman Scoop’s ad-libs and beats reminding you that we used to get lite before we got sturdy, the collection began.
The show could divide into two stages, the lighter shades followed by the darker ones. The graduation of color paired perfectly with the natural dimming of light as guests viewed the show outdoors. Tier showed chino shorts paired with cardigans and hoodies displaying the brand name. Partnering with Tier, motifs from Art Never Dies, show collaborator and creative group were stylized on tees and hoodies. This includes the phrase “Breaking the cycle through leadership and knowledge”. An accessory not often seen on NYFW stages was a laptop case with ‘Tier’ embroidery, serving as a clutch. Tier also showcased a shoulder bag, tan and triangular, with their signature logo stitched on the side.
The streetwear staples of sweatsuits, tees, and hoodies were styled with button-downs, emphasizing the layering options and scholarly look. Sweater dresses, bomber jackets of various materials (including satin), and deep denim jackets moved the show into a darker color palette. Then, Tier surprised showgoers with the inclusion of evening wear. A purple pleated cocktail dress and velvet black maxi dress made their way down the runway. They served as a reminder that Tier has evolved, but still has so much more to offer.
The show was a battle between themes of New York City pride and knowledge. Guests could spot actors and musicians sprinkled into the casted NYFW models. From the campus to the steppers and the collection, Tier University was a strong display of storytelling and community.
